Tell us something about yourself. What inspired you to start your journey in this industry?
I have dedicated over 50 years to the manufacturing sector, holding various global leadership roles, notably at General Dynamics Corporation. My passion for manufacturing was ignited early in life growing up in my father’s welding and machine shop located literally in our back yard. This led to my desire to understand and implement advanced manufacturing technologies. This journey led me to my current role as President and CEO of the Manufacturing Technology Deployment Group (MTDG), where I focus on bridging the gap between innovative manufacturing solutions and small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
What solutions or services does The Manufacturing Technology Deployment Group, Inc. (MTDG) offer to its clients? Would you tell us the overall vision behind MTDG and your focus today?
MTDG serves as a holding company for the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining and Advanced Manufacturing International. Our mission is to support SMEs by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and support necessary to integrate advanced manufacturing methods. We focus on applied research and the practical deployment of manufacturing technologies, aiming to make these enterprises more efficient and competitive in the evolving technological landscape.
What role do you believe innovation and technology will play in driving positive change in the next 5–10 years?
Innovation and technology are pivotal in shaping the future of manufacturing. In the next decade, advancements such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality will revolutionize production processes, enhance efficiency, and open new avenues for product development. Embracing these technologies will be crucial for manufacturers to stay competitive and meet the evolving demands of the market.
Every CEO has numerous responsibilities. Being a visionary leader at MTDG, what added responsibilities are you dealing with?
Beyond the typical executive duties, my role involves staying abreast of emerging technologies and understanding their potential impact on SMEs. I am committed to fostering partnerships between manufacturing companies and educational institutions to drive innovation and workforce development. Additionally, I focus on guiding our team in applied research initiatives that directly benefit our clients.
Can you describe your leadership philosophy? How has it evolved over the years, and how is it helping to shape the future of your organization or cause?
My leadership philosophy centers on empowerment, continuous learning, and collaboration. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of adapting to change and encouraging my team to embrace new ideas. At MTDG, this philosophy fosters an environment where innovation thrives, enabling us to effectively support SMEs in adopting advanced manufacturing technologies.
Who or what inspired you to become the leader you are today, and how do you continue to stay inspired as you move forward?
Throughout my career, I’ve been inspired by industry pioneers who have leveraged technology to drive transformation. The success stories of SMEs overcoming challenges through innovation motivate me. I stay inspired by engaging with emerging technologies and witnessing their tangible benefits in the manufacturing sector.
